9th Grade Awesome Week!
Post date: May 5, 2016 6:11:49 PM
During the week of April 11th 9th grade students participated in Awesome Week. Students chose one of six different courses offered.
What is AWESOME WEEK, you ask? Well, it is a week where our 9th grade will leave our school campus and make NYC our classroom, traveling places all over Manhattan and Brooklyn as we explore how all the stuff we learn in school actually applies in the real world. Each student gets to select the exploration that inspires the most curiosity in their life. Check out our activities!
Ever wondered how commercials get made? In this course, students will learn how a product gets marketed to consumers (us!). Following the process from start to finish, students will visit an advertising agency, research a product, conduct consumer surveys, write a script for a 30 second radio commercial, cast an actor to read the script, direct and finally produce a commercial in one of the city's premier recording studios
Try this if you are captivated by commercials, advertising, and the recording process.
Early NYC History
Students will spend the week exploring Native American culture in the Smithsonian, visiting the museum of the city of New York, and take a walking tour of lower Manhattan. Students will also engage in research at the Brooklyn Public library. At the end, students will put together a museum exhibit showing how early New York developed.
Try this if you are love to learn more about the history around us or if you like to explore new places
Building our World Together: One Green Step at a Time
Are you interested in inventing and building? Do you have an eye for design and a creative mind? Come learn how to utilize the newest technological advances and explore green design in our communities. The "green" architect designs structures using eco-friendly materials that are actually good for our environment. So come design a solar race car or learn how wind energy can help us save the world
Try this if you are interested in engineering, artistic design, or saving our planet!
Feeling Good from the Inside Out
Being a teenage girl isn’t easy! Turn on the television or open a magazine and you will find a world of unfair images and expectations that tell women they must look or dress a certain way in order to be and feel worthy. Sometimes we get so caught up in the trends and other people’s expectations, that we forget to focus on what is best for us. In this course, we will explore what it means to be the happiest and healthiest versions of ourselves and we will do it together, as a supportive and strong sisterhood. On our journey towards self-discovery, we will get insider haircare, skincare, and makeup tips straight from the pros, learn how to dress for our body types, practice preparing healthy snacks that fuel our bodies and much much more. By the end of this course, we will have learned how to care for our bodies and souls from the inside out.
Try this if you like sports, eating, and taking care of your body.
Show Your Voice
How will you change the world? Over the course of the week, you will write, perform, and film your own art pieces to answer this question. We will work in the beautiful, cutting-edge BRIC House and explore the delicious food and cultural wealth that Downtown Brooklyn has to offer.
Try this if you love to make or act in movies.
Celebrating NYC Through Movies
NYC has been the backdrop of countless movies and television shows. It is arguably the most recognizable city in the world. Do you know how Times Square got its name? The secrets of Central Park? In this course, you will learn about the city in which you live, from the bridges to the buildings.
Try this if you would love to explore NYC, watch movies, and learn about the cultural history of our amazing city!
